[ Bahasa Indonesia ]

The Rainforest Foundation, Norway  - Regnskogsfondet in Norwegian - was formed in 1989 after the musician Sting and the Indian chief Raoni came to Norway as part of a campaign against the destruction of the world's rain forests. Our main focus is in Brazil where we support 8 projects. Since 1997 we have also become engaged in Asia, where we now support projects in Indonesia, Malaysia and New Guinea.

Our guiding philosophy is that the struggle for the rain forests can be won only if we manage to strengthen the local interests working to save the forest. Our projects support Indians and other traditional peoples, such as the Kubu of Sumatra, in their effort to keep their forests and thus the source of their livelihoods.

The Rainforest Foundation, Norway has a small but highly dedicated staff of 7 and a wide network of contacts and supporters in the project countries and in many other parts of the world. Our governing board contains some of the foremost experts in Norway on rain forests and indigenous people. Our organization is a member of Rainforest Foundation International, whose main office is in New York. There are now Rainforest Foundations in England, Norway, Austria, Japan, and the United States of America.

The Rainforest Foundation, Norway is a project-oriented organization but also runs extensive information activities. Our development assistance is based on principles of solidarity and environmental awareness. All our projects are run by local organizations in the countries concerned and are thus based on local competence. The Rainforest Foundation, Norway receives valuable support from NORAD, Operation Day's Work, and private donors. We maintain an active advocacy campaign directed at the general public and the government in Norway. Our newsletter Nytt fra Regnskogsfondet (News From the Rainforest Foundation) is published quarterly.
